This morning the federal Opposition has made a consequential decision: Angus Taylor has defeated Sussan Ley to become Leader of the Liberal Party. The outcome signals a shift in tone and positioning as the party continues to struggle after its 2025 election loss.

For organisations engaging federally, this reshapes the advocacy landscape and the issues which will be discussed in Canberra for the rest of the year.

Taylor’s leadership pitch focused on restoring living standards, defending “Australians’ way of life”, and presenting a sharper alternative to Labor. He is tipped to shift to the right on cultural issues – like the primacy of the Australian national flag – in order to combat One Nation.

Whereas his pitch to metropolitan voters will focus on economic management, lower taxes and combatting high inflation.

The new leader faces an early test of his leadership, with Sussan Ley indicating she will resign from Parliament and trigger a by-election in the regional electorate of Farrer.

The contest is likely to be closely watched, with the potential for a three-cornered race between the Liberals, Nationals and a surging One Nation.

The Agenda Group stands ready to help your organisation understand what this shift means in practice - who holds influence in the new structure and how best to engage as federal politics enters a new phase.
